THE INVISIBLE GREEN

Lara Spencer is clearly a seasoned television personality. She is the lifestyle anchor for Good Morning America. She is a correspondent for Nightline and ABC News. She previously hosted The Insider and was a contributor to The Early Show on CBS. Ms. Spencer was also the National Correspondent for Good Morning America and even hosted Antiques Roadshow FYI. She appears semi regularly on Rachael Ray in a segment titled The Dish. Also a little known fact (at least to me) is she created and was the executive producer of It's Worth What? hosted by Cedric the Entertainer. I could go on and on about her credentials but what brings her to The Emerald Obsessive? She recently forgot the cardinal rule of television and committed a major faux pas: SHE WORE GREEN WHILE USING A GREEN SCREEN! Looking like a floating head is not a great look! Take a gander and tell me what you think!

GOODBYE HONEYSUCKLE

As 2011 comes to an end, we say goodbye to the Pantone color of the year, Honeysuckle.
But don't fret, 2012 welcomes Tangerine Tango as Pantone's 2013 color of the year. The reddish-orange color will be featured in abundance.

SPRING CLOTHES ARE COMING

As we know, spring clothes will pop up in stores everywhere shortly, but that doesn't mean green can't be part of our spring wardrobe.  Here model Alex Wek shows us how to incorporate green with other colors in a lighter fabric.

Former wife of NBA player, Greg Anthony, Crystal McCrary Anthony wears green! I saw these pictures of her in Essence Magazine and wanted to share with you. "An entertainment lawyer turned TV producer and on-air personality, Crystal McCrary Anthony has transitioned her classic contemporary style from what she calls boring and at times frightening, to a fab collection of ladylike dresses and winning everyday staples. She continues to evolve her look using many of the prized multi-purpose pieces she collected over the years. She thinks of a great outfit as a perfectly orchestrated jazz song, and from the looks of things, she's a master composer!" (taken from Essence Magazine)

I'm tempted to let you guess what it is but it's Sunday morning and I just don't feel like being that mean this morning! So I will tell you.

2011

pic provided by yahoo.com

I had such a great Thanksgiving holiday I'm almost sorry to see it go. I have had so much to be thankful for this year that I spent the weekend reflecting. The "good" for this year was really good and the "bad" was oh so bad. I lost a few close friends and relatives this year. And while I'm saddened by their passing, I rejoice in the fact that I got to know them in the first place. I was very ill earlier this year but I made it through without hearing words others have heard from doctors far too often. Some things have gone really well and some I learned from the mistakes I made. It was a year of growth for me and I appreciate all of the lessons I've gathered. I've made new friends who will never replace those I've lost but I'm glad for the opportunity to make new memories. Even though I look forward to the new year's arrival, I'll still be sad to see 2011 take its' leave.

NBC GOES GREEN

My husband woke me up last night to tell me that the NBC logo was all green. I didn't understand what he meant so I got up to look and there it was: the NBC peacock was sporting all green feathers! I grabbed my cell phone and took the best picture I could with eyes half open.

I went back to sleep without thinking too much about it. But when I woke up this morning, The Today Show logo was green as well. Surely they didn't change their logos just so The Emerald Obsessive would have something to talk about so I looked up the reason.

"NBCUniversal is making a commitment to sustainability across the entire company. Our Green is Universal initiative focuses on bringing an environmental perspective to everything we do, informing and entertaining our audiences while incorporating more sustainable practices into our own operations. As one of the world’s largest media and entertainment companies, we want to participate in and help lead one of the most important dialogues of our time–and build a stronger business and a more sustainable world in the process."

The simplest way we can help is by using drinking mugs and coffee cups instead of paper, styrofoam and plastic!

JADE AND TEAL ARE NOT EMERALD!

I'm in love with most shades of green, but the the bluish greens are the ones that get most of my attention. The yellowish greens aren't a good color for me but when looking into the color green, you can't leave them out. When I decided to start focusing on the color green, I found out there are so many shades. First you have your nature shades: asparagus, dark, fern, forest, hooker, jungle, laural, light, mantis, moss, myrtle, pale, pine, sap, tea and teal (there are probably bunches more). Then you have the other greens: Army, bottle, bright, Brunswick, Cal Poly Pomona, celadon, Dartmouth, emerald, feldgrau (field grey) , green-yellow, Harlequin, hunter, India, Islamic, jade, kelly, midnight, MSU, neon, North Texas, office, Pakistan, Paris, Persian, rifle, Sacramento State, sea, UP Forest. (Again, I'm sure there are more)

Before I became aware of anything honoring the month of my birth with the gemstone, emerald, I knew about the Emerald City in the movie The Wizard of Oz. I must admit I never read the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank  Baum. In the book, everything in the city is emerald green. In reality, everything in the city is a normal color but glasses worn by the residents are tinted with emerald green. Thanks Wikipedia because I never knew that! Now I feel like I've cheated my kids out of the full story of The Wizard of Oz! The first recorded use of the word emerald as the name of a color in English was in 1598.

Now I knew Ireland was referred to as the Emerald Isle but I didn't know Seattle Washington is sometimes called the Emerald City because the rain keeps the vegetation lush. I never heard of the Emerald Buddha which is okay because the figurine is actually jade. Speaking of jade (jade green), in the Chinese culture, you give something made of jade to express love. Jade unlike emerald is usually found in the opaque color. The color teal is a medium blue green that was used as the background color in the post-2004 redesigned version of the United States $100.00 bill.

While I'm at it, the green used as the green light of a stop light is made up of a blue lens on a yellow light for the benefit of people who have red-green color blindness. Bet you didn't know that!

I hope I didn't bore you with my newly acquired knowledge of the color green but there are just some things we need to know!!! I'm off now to buy my kids a copy of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz for Christmas. They need to know the truth about the Emerald City!  Have a generously green week!

Say what you will about Rihanna, but the girl has great fashion style! This picture was taken earlier this year while Rihanna was at House of Fraser in Central London to promote her new fragrance Reb'l Fleur. I absolutely love the outfit even if it is turquoise and not green! IT'S STILL ALL ABOUT THE GREEN

My daughter just skimmed through Elle Magazine's October 2011 issue when she came across something she knew I would love! Thank you Samantha! Their From Russia With Love article featured...GREEN! I just had to share the pictures with you. For those of you who are shy about wearing color the short green leather gloves or the cape lined in green would be perfect for you. But for those who aren't shy, that vintage Max Mara cotton jumpsuit (circa 1976-1977) is just the thing for you! I'm loving the green tights and the elbow length gloves! Tell me what you think and when you wear green .. send a picture to emeraldgreen@gmail.com so I can post! (clothing by Max Mara. VELVET

Okay, so after my last post, I immediately began looking for a white velvet dress.. haven't found one yet but I'm going to keep looking...but I found something that I just have to have and need to find a reason to wear it. I found emerald green velvet Infinity Dresses by Vintage Origin on etsy.com!

WHITE DRESSES

I've spoken before about wearing white after Labor Day and I think we all agree white can be worn any time of the year. With that thought in mind, I started looking for white items I would like to buy and ran across a great website! Take a look at www.shopwhitedress.com they've got a fantastic sale going on. The website reminded me that there are several events that a white dress is required ie: perhaps graduation, sorority initiations, vacations, informal weddings etc. Can you imagine all of your guest wearing white for Christmas!

This site also gave me a great idea...I'll post pictures as soon as I find it! Oh, you don't want me to keep it a secret... a white velvet dress! I hope I find one!

GETTING READY FOR CHRISTMAS!

I know what you're thinking...we haven't eaten the turkey for Thanksgiving and I'm already talking about Christmas. But since a lot of us are already thinking about what we want for Christmas, I thought this would be a good time to talk about giving. One group I'd like to acknowledge is the Dress for Success/Suits to Self-Sufficiency program. You can find a location near you on www.dressforsuccess.org.

For those who don't know what this program is about, in short, they collect gently used suits for disadvantaged women to wear to interviews for employment. Whatever you would wear to an interview is what they are looking for. "The clothing that Dress for Success provides to our clients symbolizes our faith in every woman's ability to succeed." Their belief is "Dress for Success solves the catch-22 that confronts disadvantaged women trying to enter the workforce: without a job, how can you afford a suit? But without a suit, how can you get a job?"

Once a client in the program obtains employment, she can return to Dress for Success to receive enough clothing to mix and match for a week's worth of outfits. Since now is the time most retail stores are hiring seasonal workers, a lot of women will be out searching for employment. Looking good at the interview may help them land a permanent and full time job!

Please support this program for Christmas...give a gift that keeps on giving!

FASHIONABLE FIRST LADY MICHELLE OBAMA

photo via Getty
Recently, our First Lady Michelle Obama made an appearance at a Walgreen's in Chicago. She was encouraging the Mayor Rahm Emanuel to make healthy food available and affordable for people living in lower income level neighborhoods. And while I'm all about healthy and affordability, I was all about the Tracy Reese big bow sweater she was wearing! As usual, the FLOTUS looked amazing!

LITTLE GREEN DRESSES!

For the seamstresses or casual sewers, Tina Sparkes has written Little Green Dresses: 50 Original Patterns for Repurposed Dresses, Top, Skirts and More. I found it on www.amazon.com for $15.60.  Ms. Sparkles book isn't a book of all green dresses as I had hoped but "green" as in eco-friendly. It's for diy'ers who want to change up what they already own. The reviews about this book are varied, however the book received 10 five star ratings out of 18! The book is 256 pages, published by Taunton Press.

Have I read the book you ask...no I haven't but because I want to stretch my wardrobe, I plan to. Read the reviews and see what you think. If you're into eco-friendliness and saving our planet...you might want to check it out.

MORE GREENS!

I'm always on the lookout for anything affordable and green. Well this morning I happened to look at Old Navy's website and lo and behold I found some really affordable pieces. I need another coat or jacket like I need a hole in my head but I've got to get their green peacoat to wear when I start back to University of Memphis in January. Okay, the colors for UofM are blue and gray, but I'm sure a shock of color will be welcomed! (all pictures provided by oldnavy.com)

Old Navy 3/4 sleeve jersey top $26.94
Old Navy Wrap Front Dress $34.50
Old Navy Peacoat $69.50

Old Navy Satin Tank $29.94

HEEL CONDOMS AND HEEL PANTIES

Recently I told you about a product I had never seen on the market before, Heel Condoms! Such a novel idea I wonder why no one had thought of this before. Shoes have become my new obsession but I can't wear the stilettos seen on most of the models or in a lot of advertisements. I wanted to find something to dress up or change the look of some of the shoes I already had in my closet. I thought about painting them, gluing embellishments on them and even considered using duct tape to make designs on them! I was perusing the internet for a pair of shoes I needed in a particular color and stumbled upon Heel Condoms! Just think, such a simple and inexpensive way to wear your favorite and most comfortable shoes without appearing to wear the same shoes all the time.

In comes Sandrysabel Ortiz, the founder and creator of Heel Condoms. I contacted Ms. Ortiz to get answers to a couple of questions I had:

EO: When did you come up with this idea?
SO: I came up with it in March 2010 and launched the product in October 2010.

EO: Why did you come up with this idea?
SO: I was traveling a lot on the weekends and found it hard to fit all my shoes in a carry-on suitcase. So I thought “why not take just one basic pair and dress it up?”.

EO: Can the heel condoms be used on a shorter heel like 2 ¼?
SO: Absolutely! The Heel Panties you find in (www.heelcondoms.myshopify.com) do not have the heel part so they fit all heel widths.

EO: Are you the original designer of heel condoms?
SO: YES!

I would like to thank Sandrysabel Ortiz for taking a few minutes to talk to us. I'm so happy to find out about Heel Panties and Heel Condoms!  As soon as you can run...don't walk to www.heelcondoms.myshopify.com!

A FEW LOOKS FOR FALL

pic provided by google images

I'm so glad to see the tie neck shirts coming back! It's feels almost like wearing a dressier turtleneck. I'm looking to add one or two to my fall wardrobe, especially if I find one in green.
Speaking of green, I found some gorgeous dresses on modshop.com. I'd love to add one or two of these dresses to my wardrobe as well. What's your go to color for fall and winter?
